STUDIES

Ocean Shippping Consultants, a British consulting firm, conducted the market study for the Port of the Americas.

The Project's approval required the preparation of a local Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) that was approved by the Environmental Quality Board (EQB), as well as a similar document required by the federal government which was approved by the Corps of Engineers. In addition, the Project requires permits from the Corps of Engineers for (1.) the dredging of the Bay of Ponce (which started in June 2005), (2.) the disposition of the dredged sediments in the ocean, and (3.) the construction of the terminal (first phase completes in 2004), in addition to requiring a Water Quality Certification from the EQB and an endorsement from the Planning Board's Coastal Zone Program.
