Phases
Phase 1
The
first 1,200 ft (365.76 m) of quay were built on the last quarter of 2005.
The pier is able to accommodate four modern quay cranes with a rail gauge
of 100ft (30.48 m). The undertaking was finished two months ahead of
schedule and has been recognized as an outstanding project of engineering.
Phase 2
The dredging to 50 ft (15.24 m) of the
entrance channel and piers marked the beginning of the second phase and
will make the port the deepest in the Caribbean region. The dredging
project should
be
completed by the third quarter of 2006. The second part of this phase
contemplates de development of 18 acres of land adjacent to the new piers
for the storage of containers with a yard capacity of 250,000 TEU’s
of annual throughput. Work will begin in the first quarter of 2006 and
is expected to take 30 months.
Phase 3
Contemplates land reclaiming for the
construction of a 50 ft
(15.24
m) deep canal that will have 1500 feet of quay side able to handle four
modern quay cranes. Additional container yard development will bring
total capacity to 700,000 TEU’s. Construction of this third phase
is may begin by late 2007.
Phase 4
This
stage will mark the completion of the Port of the Americas with the enlargement
of the channel built on the previous stage to 3,000 feet (914.4m)
and container yard storage of an additional 700,000 TEU’s for a
total of 1.4 million.
