ABOUT THE PROYECT

The Port of the Americas Authority is actively developing the
Port of the Americas Project in the existing facilities of the Port of Ponce. The later, a public port in south coast of Puerto Rico (U.S.), has been in operation since 1911 and in 2005 had an enviable 24% return on investment and a 15% increase in general cargo, mainly from long standing partners.

The Port of the Americas Project, financed by the central government as an island wide infrastructure solution to the imminent overcapacity of the transportation system, counts with a commitment of +250 million U.S. Dollars for a series of infrastructure projects in the Port of Ponce. With the 2nd phase envisaged to be ready by the first quarter of 2008, the Port of the Americas will consist of a 1200 feet (365.76 mt) of newly built quayside with 100 rail gauge (30.48 mt) designed for super post panamax cranes, 50 feet (15.24 mt) depth berths, and a newly built yard with an annual capacity for 250,000 TEU’s. Two additional phases are being contemplated, and being currently designed, that will expand the aforementioned facilities to 4,400 feet (1,34 linear meters) of quayside and yard storage for 1.4 million TEU’s.
